First Friends of the Trolley Park Meeting: March 24

Friends of the Trolley Park will have its first meeting on March 24th, 12:00 at the Harriet Tubman School Library. The friends group is looking for interested park users to contribute ideas about park maintenance and event programming. Please drop by this meeting if you would like to be involved. Also, save the morning of April 7th for an Easter Egg Hunt at the Park, more details forthcoming as the event approaches.

Columbia Heights: Great Green Place

Just saw this video, recorded over two years ago, from the National Building Museum, which explains why Columbia Heights is a “great green place.” Of course, since this video was recorded, the neighborhood has further improved its public and green spaces and augmented its environmentally-friendly commercial and residential density.

Saturday Clean-Up and Park Event

Saturday, March 3rd, features a great morning of neighborhood events. From 9:30 to 10:30 A.M., be sure to drop by 11th Street between Park and Monroe to participate in our first neighborhood clean-up. We plan to have these clean-ups on the first Saturday of every month throughout the Spring and Summer. Following the clean-up, at 10:30, there will be a discounted neighborhood brunch for clean-up volunteers at Meridian Pint. Finally, at noon, Mayor Gray will preside over a ribbon cutting at the beautiful new Park at 11th and Monroe. Hope to see everyone there!

Volunteer Opportunity at 826DC

826DC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around our understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

With the new year, 826DC is making a big push to deepen our volunteer base. With only one full-time employee, we are almost entirely volunteer-run, and need lots of help serving the more than 1,500 young people we tutor in our center (located inside “The Museum of Unnatural History”) and in partnership with teachers throughout the district.

We have no minimum time commitment, and volunteers do not need to have previous experience writing, tutoring or teaching to help out. Interested? Sign up here to learn more or email volunteer@826dc.org!

Local Restaurant Round-Up

Lots of new and soon-to-open local restaurants have been in the news lately. Keep an eye on our local business page, which we will continually update with new web addresses. Here is a summary of some of the tremendous culinary diversity soon to grace Columbia Heights:

Paila Chilean Grill has been open for a few months on Park Road between 14th and 15th, and it was featured in this great Washington Post article.
Maple, a new Italian restaurant, soon open on 11th Street, between Park and Monroe. Prince of Petworth and New Columbia Heights provide more information.
Coffy Cafe, a coffee shop and crepery, will open in early 2012 on 14th Street, just north of Park Road. Keep updated on its progress via its Facebook page.
A new 24 hour diner / bar / lounge from the owner of The Diner and Tryst is currently under construction, and slated to open on 11th Street between Park and Monroe in April.
Z-Burger’s build-out is nearly complete, and they will open in February.
The Pinch will serve contemporary American cuisine at 14th and Parkwood, beginning in the Spring.
Construction is also underway at Jackie Greenbaum’s future taqueria on 11th Street.
Le Caprice D.C., a french bakery, will open within a few weeks on 14th Street, in the Allegro condominium building.
In other local culinary news, neighborhood favorite Room 11 recently began serving brunch, to rave reviews. Room 11 will soon be expanding into its adjacent building.
