Graffiti Removal

I am sure that many of you noticed the recent graffiti explosion around the 11th Street area. It is important to paint over / remove graffiti as soon as it appears, to send a message that it will not remain visible for very long in our community. The city will remove graffiti from your property if you contact them at this link:

2010 Year in Review

2010 was a very busy year for the North Columbia Heights Civic Association. In sum:

* We added five new board members: Jason Fox, Yavonne and William Vaughn, Rebecca Perlmutter, and Joe Friedman.
* We created a new webpage packed with neighborhood links, information, news, and photos, as well as a new Facebook page, which has 64 fans and counting.
* We designed, with artistic work by Robbi Behr, and sold a Columbia Heights T-shirt (shirts still available in sizes L through XXL, apologies for running out of smaller sizes)!
* We manned, for the first time, a table at Columbia Heights Day.
* We organized a number of neighborhood clean-ups, including a very successful clean-up in conjunction with the Prince of Petworth, and began a tradition of post clean-up brunches at Meridian Pint.
* We conducted several meetings, featuring local politicians, developers, and business owners as guest speakers.

We are hoping for bigger and better things in 2011, starting with our first meeting of the year (which will be on March 2, details forthcoming soon) as well as our big spring initiative, the first annual Great Day of Service on April 2nd. Neighborhood clean-ups will likewise resume as soon as the weather improves. What is “North” Columbia Heights?

One of the most commonly asked questions of us during Columbia Heights Day was “So what is North Columbia Heights?” According to our About Us section, we define North Columbia Heights as an area which “stretches between 16th Street and Georgia Ave. (west-east) and Spring Road and Irving Street (north-south) in Northwest Washington, D.C. ” This would correspond to the darker shaded area in the map. While our organization is known as the North Columbia Heights Civic Association, we by no means wish to exclude our neighbors to the south. It is important for us that all residents of the Columbia Heights neighborhood feel they have a voice and an organization that helps represent them and their interests. So if you are from north, south, east, or west Columbia Heights, or the surrounding neighborhoods, please consider the NCHCA your local community organization!

Hi folks, please explore the new and vastly-improved NCHCA Homepage. Thanks to Jason Fox for all of his hard work setting this page up. You will find here information about this organization and minutes of (most — some info still-to-come) past meetings, links to a wide variety of community organizations, projects, and businesses, as well as a neighborhood blog aggregator. Many more features are still under development. If there are additional features, links, or content you think would be useful to include, please make note of that in the comments to this blog post. In particular, I am looking to aggregate a list of information and contacts for Columbia Heights community service organizations / opportunities here, so if you know of any local service providers / opportunities, please make note of that.
